During the winter months, the cold and dryness in the air takes a toll on the skin. The drop in humidity makes the skin prone to dryness and flaking. This makes the skin more prone to rashes and infection because of the cracks that form, which makes it easier for bacteria to enter. However, there are ways to prevent that this winter season.
It is important during these months more than others to implement the use of moisturizers in your daily routine. That is the simplest way to prevent dryness and cracking of the skin. There are many different types of moisturizers each for different skin types and environments that you are exposed to.
Water Based vs. Oil Based Moisturizers:
A water-based moisturizer is lightweight and absorbs into the skin faster than oil-based moisturizers. They don’t leave a greasy feeling on the hands, so going about your day after putting this type of moisturizer on won’t cause a loose grip or things to slip from the hands. However, they may require frequent reapplication depending on how fast your skin absorbs the lotion and keeps hydrated. Typically, the word “lotion” will be written on those bottles.
On the other hand, oil-based moisturizers are heavier and absorbs slower into the skin which makes it last longer on the surface. They typically leave a greasy feeling on the hands. These types of moisturizer are great for excessive dryness and require less reapplication. To prevent the greasy feeling on the hands during the day, it would be good to apply a heavy moisturizer at night so that it absorbs into the skin overnight. Typically, the word “cream” will be written on those bottles.
If you want to add extra hydration before starting the day, there are soaps that come with a moisturizing formula in them as well. However, using the soap alone most likely won’t be enough to keep your skin hydrated throughout the day. It is better to pair it with a cream or lotion after.
How Often to Moisturize:
Depending on your skin type, you may need to moisturize about 1-3 times a day to keep your skin hydrated. Excessive dryness may cause you to apply more, or if your skin doesn’t get as dry, you may apply less. You are also able to mix types of moisturizers as well. During the day, a water-based moisturizer can be used and then using an oil-based moisturizer before going to bed.
Supplementally, you can use a humidifier as well. The use of heaters in homes adds dryness to the air, effecting your skin. The humidifier will increase the humidity in your home, to lessen the impact the dryness the heat causes.
The multiple combinations and use of these products will help in reducing the dryness caused by the environment of the winter months.
