MSKTC Resource: Spasticity

The Model System Knowledge and Translation Center (MSKTC) is a national center that helps facilitate the knowledge translation process to make research meaningful to those with Spinal Cord Injury, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Burn Injury. We have heard growing concerns for spasticity, so we wanted to share resources on managing spasms.

Spasticity is the uncontrolled tightening or contracting of the muscles that is common in individuals with spinal cord injuries. About 65%–78% of the SCI population have some amount of spasticity, and it is more common in cervical (neck) than thoracic (chest) and lumbar (lower back) injuries. There are different triggers and problems for spasticity, but there are also many benefits.

We highly recommend you check out these factsheets, videos, podcasts, and their library of factsheets related to spinal cord injury care.  You can check them out at https://msktc.org/sci/factsheets/spasticity-and-spinal-cord-injury
