As we celebrate Independence Day, the United Spinal Association Northeast Ohio (USANEO) Chapter wishes you and your loved ones a safe, fun, and memorable holiday!
The Fourth of July is a time to gather with family and friends, enjoy backyard barbecues, watch fireworks, and celebrate the freedoms we cherish. Whether you’re attending a community event or relaxing at home, taking a few extra precautions can help ensure the holiday is enjoyable for everyone—especially those living with a spinal cord injury.
Three Tips for a Safe Independence Day
1. Stay Cool and Stay Hydrated
Summer temperatures can increase the risk of overheating, especially for people with spinal cord injuries who may have impaired temperature regulation. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, seek shade whenever possible, wear lightweight clothing, and consider bringing a cooling towel or portable fan if you’ll be outdoors for an extended period.
2. Protect Your Skin
Long days outside can increase the risk of sunburn and pressure injuries. Apply sunscreen to exposed skin and reapply it regularly, especially if you’re spending time in direct sunlight. If you’ll be sitting in your wheelchair for long periods during parades, cookouts, or fireworks, remember to perform regular pressure reliefs and check your skin after the festivities.
3. Enjoy Fireworks from a Safe Distance
Fireworks are a holiday favorite, but they can also be dangerous. Whenever possible, attend a professional fireworks display rather than using consumer fireworks. Choose an accessible viewing location with enough space to maneuver your wheelchair safely, and be mindful of uneven terrain, crowded areas, and falling debris after the show.
Celebrate Safely, Celebrate Together
Independence Day is about creating memories with the people who matter most. A little planning can go a long way toward making the day comfortable, safe, and enjoyable.
From all of us at the United Spinal Association Northeast Ohio Chapter, thank you for being part of our community. We wish you a Happy Independence Day filled with connection, celebration, and plenty of reasons to smile.
Happy Fourth of July! 🇺🇸
