In 21st-century America, driving represents far more than just getting from point A to point B—it’s a symbol of freedom, autonomy, and connection to the world. But for many individuals with functional impairments, this independence can be lost, leading to isolation, increased dependence on caregivers, and even unsafe driving attempts.
At MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute, a long-standing Driver Rehabilitation Program has helped countless individuals reclaim their ability to drive safely. However, until recently, those with the most severe physical impairments were often left without viable options.
That’s changing—thanks to a passionate team of therapists, physicians, and researchers who came together to advocate for solutions that address these challenges. Today, even individuals with complex conditions, such as high tetraplegia (paralysis of both arms and legs), have new hope. While traditional adaptive controls work for many, they can be too difficult for some. These individuals may be perfectly capable cognitively and visually but still unable to operate standard vehicle modifications due to limited physical strength.
For anyone wondering if driving might be possible for them or a loved one, the journey begins with a conversation—with a doctor, a therapist, or the MetroHealth team. Each person’s abilities and challenges are unique, and the MetroHealth Driver Rehabilitation Program offers personalized evaluations. Some individuals may be eligible for on-road assessments the same day, while others may follow a longer rehabilitation path.
